In recent years a rich psychology has begun to develop of the human processes involved in prayer. This is not only of intrinsic psychological interest, but also directly relevant to the practical task of praying better. In the morning session, Fraser Watts will focus on the psychology of some traditional aspects of prayer, such as confession, thanksgiving, petition and intercession. In the afternoon session we will take a broader view of prayerfulness and spiritual practice, looking at the psychology of more meditative forms of prayer, and of worship.

Many of us are aware of the steep challenges churches face today: struggling clergy, widespread pastoral needs, declining numbers, religious abuse, fundamentalism, conflict between theological orientations, dysfunctional organisational systems and practices.
On the other hand are the great resources of the faith: forgiveness, grace, love, pastoral support and healing, the search for truth, creativity and a growing freedom to carve out new ways of being church, while hanging on to the best of tradition. How can psychologists serve the church - attending to both its needs and its strengths?
But what if the church in your environ doesn`t particularly want to be `served` by psychology…?
Five presenters (from social, pastoral, organisational, and clinical backgrounds) will share from their experience and expertise in serving the church. Skills and strategies that work will be covered, to empower the BACIP membership and other interested attenders to carve their own way forward. Discussion and plenary sessions will be very important in this conference as we hammer out ways forward for the training and empowering of psychologists to offer service in a way that meets with the endorsement of the church.
